Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came. She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all. Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal. They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind. War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

EXCERPT

Katy I still stared at Daemon, completely aware that everyone else except him was watching me. Closely. But why wouldn’t he look at me? A razor-sharp panic clawed at my insides. No. Thiscouldn’t be happening. No way.
My body was moving before I even knew what I was doing. From the corner of my eye, I saw Dee shake her head and one of the Luxen males step forward, but I was propelled by an inherent need to prove that my worst fears were not coming true. After all, he’d healed me, but then I thought of what Dee had said, of how Dee had behaved with me. What if Daemon was like her? Turned into something so foreign and cold? He would’ve healed me just to make sure he was okay. I still didn’t stop.
Please, I thought over and over again. Please. Please. Please. On shaky legs, I crossed the long room, and even thoughDaemon hadn’t seemed to even acknowledge my existence, I walked right up to him, my hands trembling as I placed them on his chest. “Daemon?” I whispered, voice thick. His head whipped around, and he was suddenly staring down at me. Our gazes collided once more, and for a second I saw something so raw, so painful in those beautiful eyes. And then his large hands wrapped around my upper arms. The contact seared through the shirt I wore, branding my skin, and I thought—I expected—that he would pull me against him, that he would embrace me, and even though nothing would be all right, it would be better. Daemon’s hands spasmed around my arms, and I sucked in an unsteady breath. His eyes flashed an intense green as he physically lifted me away from him, setting me back down a good foot back. I stared at him, something deep in my chest cracking. “Daemon?” He said nothing as he let go, one finger at a time, it seemed, and his hands slid off my arms. He stepped back, returning his attention to the man behind the desk. “So . . . awkward,” murmured the redhead, smirking. I was rooted to the spot in which I stood, the sting of rejection burning through my skin, shredding my insides like I was nothing more than papier-mâché. “I think someone was expecting more of a reunion,” the Luxen male behind the desk said, his voice ringing with amusement. “What do you think, Daemon?” One shoulder rose in a negligent shrug. “I don’t think anything.” My mouth opened, but there were no words. His voice, his tone, wasn’t like his sister’s, but like it had been when we first met. He used to speak to me with barely leashed annoyance, where a thin veil of tolerance dripped from every word. The rift in my chest deepened.
For the hundredth time since the Luxen arrived, SergeantDasher’s warning came back to me. What side would Daemon and his family stand on? A shudder worked its way down my spine. I wrapped my arms around myself, unable to truly process what had just happened. “And you?” the man asked. When no one answered, he tried again. “Katy?” I was forced to look at him, and I wanted to shrink back from his stare. “What?” I was beyond caring that my voice broke on that one word. The man smiled as he walked around the desk. My gaze flickered over to Daemon as he shifted, drawing the attention of the beautiful redhead. “Were you expecting a more personal greeting?” he asked. “Perhaps something more intimate?” I had no idea how to answer. I felt like I’d fallen into the rabbit hole, and warnings were firing off left and right. Something primal inside me recognized that I was surrounded by predators.

Every Ugly Word by Aimee L. Salter helps launch new Imprint!

Hey Friends! So, you might remember last year, I raved about a self-published YA contemporary novel I loved called Breakable by Aimee Salter. You can check out my previous review here. Well, I'm super excited to help Aimee announce that her book has been picked up by a publisher and is now called Every Ugly Word (a fantastic new title)! In fact, her book is helping to launch an entirely new imprint! You can check out the press release below!

Today, Amazon Publishing and Alloy Entertainment, a division of Warner Bros. Television Group, announced a digital-first imprint that will focus on young adult, new adult and commercial fiction.

The new imprint, named Alloy Entertainment, will be part of Amazon Publishing’s Powered by Amazon program. Powered by Amazon enables publishers and authors to leverage Amazon’s global distribution and personalized, targeted marketing reach.

Alloy Entertainment, a division of the Warner Bros. Television Group, develops and produces original novels, television series and feature films.  All titles in the new Alloy imprint will have the advantage of being part of group that aggressively supports and promotes its properties.

In fact, more than 75 of AE’s books have been on The New York Times bestseller list, including The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Luxe, Veronica Mars: The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line, and The 100.

Every Ugly Word will be one of the first of three titles to be released under the newly launched imprint.

Alloy Entertainment will also look for opportunities to develop acquired titles as television series, feature films, and digital entertainment.

Every Ugly Word follows 17 year old Ashley who is relentlessly bullied at her high school and by her own mother, and his helplessly in love with her best friend, Matt, who is bullied by his father.

She seeks help by looking to her future self, “Older Me” who supports her through it all and teaches her to love herself. But is she really seeking “Older Me” or is she looking within herself for the answers?

When Ashley looks in the mirror she can see and talk to her future self. “Older Me” has been her support system through her relentless tormentor’s bullying, her unstable mother at home, and her forlorn love for her longtime best friend. But when Ashley discovers “Older Me’s” betrayal, she is targeted in the worst way and impends her last chance with Matt. She’s done with hearing every ugly word.

  About BURYING WATER:

The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away. Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him? Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried. The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

Book I was so dramatic, so book II is bound to be a roller coaster ride. Strap in!

To protect Amber's reputation, Marcus has only one option: end their relationship. He won't risk further damage to her case, even if it means breaking her heart.

Amber has to find the strength to step into the spotlight and bring awareness to victims' rights before she's convicted in the court of public opinion. And she's really not sure what's worse—that her kidnapper could walk free, or that the seemingly endless attention and speculation will drive Marcus away permanently.

Blog Tour Guest Post: Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour

Today we have the pleasure of hosting the Blog Tour for Nina LaCour's EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU!!!

A love letter to the craft and romance of film and fate in front of—and behind—the camera from the award-winning author of Hold Still.

A wunderkind young set designer, Emi has already started to find her way in the competitive Hollywood film world.

Emi is a film buff and a true romantic, but her real-life relationships are a mess. She has desperately gone back to the same girl too many times to mention. But then a mysterious letter from a silver screen legend leads Emi to Ava. Ava is unlike anyone Emi has ever met. She has a tumultuous, not-so-glamorous past, and lives an unconventional life. She’s enigmatic…. She’s beautiful. And she is about to expand Emi’s understanding of family, acceptance, and true romance.

***********************************************************

Nina LaCour talks about her favorite character in EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU:

The character of Ava, Emi’s love interest, took quite a few tries to get right. Where Emi has had an easy life full of opportunities and support, Ava has had a life tinged with tragedy. I was so focused on figuring out how Ava would come to be a runaway that her story dominated the early drafts of the novel. I even toyed with telling the story in alternating narrator’s perspectives so that Ava would have more of a voice. In the end, I cut a lot of Ava’s journey, but I learned a lot about her in the process.
I love Ava because even though she seems tragic and dramatic, really she wants simple things: to pursue what she loves and to find meaningful connections with people. Her past may be mysterious, and she may struggle with some personal demons, but she gains a sense of peace and understanding of herself that is hard-won and meaningful. She shows Emi how real life can be more dazzling than the movies, even when it’s difficult. And she has a tremendous capacity for love, even though she hasn’t had enough of it in her life.

Review: Far From You by Tess Sharpe

Sophie Winters nearly died. Twice.

The first time, she's fourteen, and escapes a near-fatal car accident with scars, a bum leg, and an addiction to Oxy that'll take years to kick.

The second time, she's seventeen, and it's no accident. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. When the cops deem Mina's murder a drug deal gone wrong, casting partial blame on Sophie, no one will believe the truth: Sophie has been clean for months, and it was Mina who led her into the woods that night for a meeting shrouded in mystery.

After a forced stint in rehab, Sophie returns home to a chilly new reality. Mina's brother won't speak to her, her parents fear she'll relapse, old friends have become enemies, and Sophie has to learn how to live without her other half. To make matters worse, no one is looking in the right places and Sophie must search for Mina's murderer on her own. But with every step, Sophie comes closer to revealing all: about herself, about Mina and about the secret they shared.

I'm not a reader of murder mysteries. Yet something about the dark setup here just drew me in! The tag line on the cover reads: "the truth won't let her go." But that's not the half of it. Sophie's palpable desperation to tell the world what really happened is hard to read. She's trapped under the weight of everyone's disappointment. And she knows she deserves it, up to a point. It's horrifying nonetheless.

Wow!

This book jumps back and forth in time, which demands the the reader pay careful attention to the "tags" at the beginning of each chapter, which help anchor the moment in time. But the story is constructed skillfully enough that the non-linear narrative is never annoying. Reading this, I got whiffs of Gillian Flynn's twisty stories. (Although the characters here are FAR more likeable!)

You will feel for Sophie, cry for Mina and want to hug Trev. And the killer? You won't see him coming!

Waiting on Wednesday: Don't Touch by Rachel M. Wilson

Breaking the spine is a meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It spotlights books that have not been released, but you should pre-order today! This week's book that we're excited about is Don't Touch by Rachel M. Wilson.

I picked this one because I met Ms. Wilson at a conference this spring. She read an excerpt of her work, and it was funny and sad and brilliant all at once. So I am 100% sold on reading this the day it comes out. Can't wait!

A powerful story of a girl who is afraid to touch another person’s skin, until the boy auditioning
for Hamlet opposite her Ophelia gives her a reason to overcome her fears.

Step on a crack, break your mother’s back.
Touch another person’s skin, and Dad’s gone for good.

Caddie can’t stop thinking that if she keeps from touching another person’s skin, her parents might get back together... which is why she wears full-length gloves to school and covers every inch of her skin.

It seems harmless at first, but Caddie’s obsession soon threatens her ambitions as an actress. She desperately wants to play Ophelia in her school’s production of Hamlet. But that would mean touching Peter, who’s auditioning for the title role—and kissing him. Part of Caddie would love nothing more than to kiss Peter—but the other part isn't sure she's brave enough to let herself fall.

Perfect for fans of Laurie Halse Anderson, this debut novel from Rachel M. Wilson is a moving story of a talented girl who's fighting an increasingly severe anxiety disorder, and the friends and family who stand by her.

Q&A with Anna Schumacher

What are 7 things you learned from writing your first book?
Here are 7 things I learned from writing my first book:
It is, in fact, possible to write and sell a novel while working fulltime, maintaining friendships and a relationship, and still enjoying your life. It just takes a little extra discipline, and the willingness to make the time.
Your work is only as good as the team around you. I was so fortunate to have an amazing editor, agent, and publicist who believed in the book as much as I did – sometimes more! I couldn’t have done this without them.
Nothing kills writer’s block like a hoop jam! Sometimes the only way I could get unstuck was to get up, grab my hoop, and move.
When it comes to time, more is more. I wrote END TIMES over the course of a summer because I was super excited about the idea and wanted to get it all down before it was gone. Then everything happened so fast: Penguin bought it, and wanted it for their spring list, and all of a sudden I had to turn around two new drafts in a month! I’m really happy with the book, but there are things I would have changed if I had more time. It still bothers me that Luna eats bacon in one scene, because in Book 2 I wanted her to be a lifelong vegan!
Some days will be more productive than others. It’s important to grab the productive days by the horns and ride them as hard as you can.
You can’t just be a writer. You also have to be a reader, a movie-watcher, a theater-goer, an occasional Netflix-binging couch potato. You have to go play outside, go dance, spend time with friends, do yoga – whatever feeds your soul besides writing. Your life becomes unbalanced if you spend all your time producing and none consuming, just as it gets out of whack if you’re always consuming without ever producing. They feed each other, and you need both to survive.
I thought all I ever wanted was to get a book published. Now, all I want is to write and publish more!

Blog Tour: Mortal Enchantment by Stacey O'Neale Interview & Giveaway

Interview with Stacey O'Neale

  1. What draws you to the paranormal genre?
I'm an avid reader of YA and adult paranormal romance. I try to read a book a week. For me, reading is an escape. When my life gets overwhelming,  I like to disappear inside a new world. It's easy to do that with paranormal. I also love the swoony men that tend to run rapid in these worlds. ;-p

  1. How did you come up with the idea for the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT series?

I was researching faeries when I kept coming across the word elemental. I googled the name and happened to stumble upon the sixteenth century works of an alchemist named Paracelsus. He identified the four types of elementals, even giving them names. My brain started spinning with ideas, and eventually, the characters came to life.

  1. What scene was your favorite to write in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT?

Chapter Twenty. I had that scene in my head even before I knew how the book would end. It's very swoon-worthy. I think readers will enjoy it.

  1. What was the hardest scene to write in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT?
It's difficult to answer this without giving anything away. I will say there's a scene where a character thinks they are about to uncover something big, but it ends up crashing and burning in their face. It was tough to write because the character feels completely responsible.
  1. Why did you decide to give the prequel novella, THE SHADOW PRINCE, away for FREE?
Because I'm a new author, I thought I would get more readers to give it a chance if it were free. I hope they fall in love with Rowan the way I have and want to know more about his role in the series. I also thought it would be fun to introduce Kalin (my series heroine) through his eyes.
  1. Can you tell us a little bit about Rowan?
Rowan is the heir to the fire court throne. He is a powerful elemental who's spent most of his life away from the court. He's got tons of family drama, but also good friends who help him through it. At times he can be a bit arrogant as most princes are, but he's also thoughtful and loyal to the people he loves.
  1. Who are some of your favorite authors?
I have a list of what I call my auto-buys. I will read anything by these authors: Gena Showalter, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, and Melissa Marr.
  1. What are you working on next?
I'd like to finish the first book in an adult science fiction romance series I started last year. I'm about halfway there. Afterwards, I have to write the second book in the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT series called FRAGILE REIGN. Needless to say, 2014 will be a busy year for me.
  1. What do you normally like to read when not writing?

On the YA side, I read a TON of paranormal, urban fantasy, and science fiction. When I'm reading adult, I like contemporary, fantasy, and paranormal. Please don't ask me for a favorite because I don’t think I can choose just one. ;-)

  1. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

      1. Read a lot. Write a lot. You can't have one without the other. It sounds simple, but it's really true.
      2. Quit making excuses. If you want to be a writer, be one. If you really want it, it won't happen without a ton of effort. Oh, and never give up!

Mortal Enchantment

“Mortal Enchantment spins a unique twist on elemental mythology. This series is not to be missed.” Jennifer L. Armentrout, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author
In Kalin Matthew's world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she's built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court.
